spring day.jpg

Gateway Friends,

Yesterday was the first official day of spring.  The grass is growing and flowers are beginning to blossom and that means allergies are in the air.  It also means we're 'playing' in the yard this Saturday at Gateway.  Join the fun and bring a rake to help spread some bark.

Holy Week launches this Sunday, March 25th.  Gateway will host two services at 9&11am and our children are singing during both services.  A light brunch in the café will be available and a bounce-house will be set up in the back yard.  Invite your friends and join us for Palm Sunday Celebration.

This Sunday we will launch a new sermon series titled: YOU ASKED FOR IT.  Submit your questions about God, culture, religion, whatever, and I will attempt to answer your questions in April. You can email, Instagram, message me through the Gateway4.com website, or jot your questions down on a piece of paper and place them in a basket on Sunday.

Hello Gateway Families!

For those of you who don't know me yet, my name is Kristin Gawne.  I'm the  Children's Ministry Director here at Gateway.  Although I have just recently stepped into this position, my husband Andrew and I have called Gateway our church home for over 6 years.  We have 2 kids . . . Savannah (5) and Trenton (2).  My greatest passion in life is raising my kids and there is no other title I hold more precious than that of being their Mom!  I have served in the Gateway kids' department for several years, and during this time I felt the Lord stirring my heart to serve in a greater capacity.  I'm grateful to be on the team and to be working with an amazing group of kids and an incredible team of teachers!

There are some exciting opportunities in Kids' Church this month and some information that I wanted to make sure you are all aware of:

Steve Sanchez - The Digital Dilemma

Mark your calendars for this Saturday, March 17th.  Gateway will be welcoming Steve Sanchez for a special parenting presentation called The Digital Dilemma.  Steve will be speaking on the topic of screen media and technology's effects on kids and families.  This event is for parents with children of all ages.  Breakfast and childcare will be provided.  i hope you will take advantage of this great opportunity to learn more about this relevant topic.

If you asked the LORD for 'one thing', what would you ask?  To win the lottery?  For wisdom, health, reconciliation, forgiveness?  The Psalmist helps us with the answer. "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life." Psalm 27:4   Friends, my prayer is that you will make time to dwell, rest, and recharge in God's Presence this week, this month, this season.  Some of you may be saying, "Pastor Greg, you're crazy, I don't have time to dwell or rest?"  Friend, I humbly submit to you that if you don't, you will most likely burn out, spin out, or crash.  Heed the Psalmist's encouragement to dwell, rest, set aside some time with the Almighty.

This is not an easy ask?  Our staff is attempting to dwell in spite of the pace around Gateway being full-tilt as we prepare for the Easter season.  This Sunday, I will share a message titled, WWJ unDO.  Join us for the 9 & 11 celebration services and come early for a special gift.

Gateway Friends -

Hard to believe the last day of February has arrived. This past month has been filled with incredible victories and indescribable challenges.  Like the winter Olympics, where we watch the joys of winning and the excruciating defeats, Gateway launched the Fixer Upper series and tackled an easy topic - renovating relationships.  Twenty-two Gateway guys rallied with dozens of other men in the Valley for a memorable retreat at Camp Crestview.  Our Middle & High School Youth ministry is growing and many are preparing for Mazatlán Mexico Mission.  We started a major remodel of the Family Room.  The Kids Ministry started an efficient check in process.  Powerful worship encounters on Sundays continued.  Life Groups gained traction.  These are just a few of the reasons to rejoice.

On the more challenging side of ministry and life: We said goodbye to a legend, God's General, Billy Graham.  I will never forget going to his crusade in Sacramento, California, as a young teenager in 1983.  (Enjoy the Tribute video attached.) The weather in February provided snow, sun, and the usual rain.  We witnessed in the news the terrible school shooting in Florida.  Our prayers go out to the seventeen families whose lives will be forever affected by the loss of their loved ones.  Many experienced the crazy flu or illness in February. Health and strength to you dear friends.

Life is full of highs and lows, health and sickness, victories and defeats, successes and failures, triumphs and tragedies, ups and downs, celebration and crisis.  Either way, we rejoice and trust Jesus to be our sustainer.  My prayer is that March will be a month filled with God's amazingly sufficient grace to help us through.

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Cor 12:9 NKJV

Billy Graham, 1918-2018

Today we both mourn and celebrate the passing of a modern-day saint.  He shared the story of Jesus' love with MILLIONS through his evangelistic ministry and I can only imagine the party happening in heaven right now!

Through the years, Billy witnessed to countless people through televised crusades.  I remember seeing them on our own TV as a child.  Thousands of crying men and women flooding the aisles of stadiums,  stepping forward to ask Jesus into their hearts as the hymn, "Just As I Am" filled the air.

I was thinking how good it would be to listen to that music again today--honoring, nostalgic.  But I can think of a much better way to celebrate the faith of Billy Graham--by sharing Jesus with someone you know.  I make no claims to be an evangelist.  It is not where I was gifted or called, but that doesn't mean that I don't have the responsibility to proclaim the Good News until Jesus comes again.  If each of us would adopt the attitude of Billy for just one day, to reach just one person for Christ, would the world change?  I promise it would change the world of that one person.

So my friends, For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him will be saved!  (Jn3:16)

Jesus loves you, and God is waiting to forgive your sins and take away the pain.  He promised you a clean start here on earth and a home in heaven when this life is over.  Will you make the decision to follow Him today?  It starts with a prayer.  Admit you are a sinner, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, Confess your faith in Him.

Find a way to share your Jesus with someone today!

Hi Gateway Family!

Happy Valentine's Day!  What a great day to remember that we are so very loved --- by the special people in our lives and by a Loving Father whose love for us is beyond measure.  (Ephesians 3:16-21)   "His love is deep - His love is high - His love is long - His love is wide!"  We can walk through our days knowing we are unconditionally loved, and we have the privilege of sharing that good news in our own circles of influence.

Have you been listening for His whisper as you start your day?  Has He given you new direction for the things you are seeking Him for this year?  I hope you are walking out His word for you this season.  My word for 2018 is "Come Alive!"  "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."

Some days, life can feel like a wilderness and wasteland . . . but what a promise!  He is making a way!  I am so grateful that God has new and fresh things for us to be part of in every season.   What has God asked you to do this week?  Has He brought to mind offenses that you have been holding on to?  Has this been a week of forgiving; letting go of the things that have been holding you to the past.  It is my hope and prayer that you are walking in victory, filled with His love and grace for you.  As you are loving and being loved today, take a minute to thank the One who loves you immeasurably.

This special day is set apart     To celebrate love from the heart

Gifts and flowers, chocolates, too     It's how we show our "I love you!"

Enjoy this day that speaks of Love     And tune your ear to Heaven above

Hear the whisper, Hear Him speak     When life is great, or when it's bleak

Take a minute; take the time     To listen as He says, "You're Mine!"

Happy Valentine's Day!

Walking in His love together,    Corky

Hi Church Family!

This is Karen Lytle here from the worship team.  First of all, it is a privilege and an honor to be able to be part of such a great family and look out on a Sunday morning and see you praising the Lord through music.  At the beginning of this year, I was listening for God’s whisper for our team’s vision.  I was a bit discouraged one Sunday morning and focused on all the details of the day instead of what my purpose is as a follower of Christ.  I read in my devotions that we are created to praise God (Love God) and love people.  It is as simple as that!  It was such a relief to not have to “strive” for other things.

I recently went to the beach and was gazing out at the ocean.  It is so vast and seems so out of control to us but God has it in perfect control.  I heard Him say, “Love uncontrollably”.  I John 4:18 says, there is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  We love because he first loved us.

As an imperfect person, I’ve already been tested with how and who I’m going to love.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart

(1 Sam. 16:7).  He even asks us to love our enemies (Matt 5:44)!  I want to love more like Christ, without trying to control who it may be; no matter what they may have said or done.  A question that I put up in my kitchen to remind me is “Who have I loved today?”  I ask you the same question.  Who can you love today?  Let’s love uncontrollably and point others to Him.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14 says, be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.  Do everything in love.

Blessings to all of you.  Love in Christ,

Karen Lytle

"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you..." James 4:8

So much has happened during this 21 Day Fast.  Gateway brothers and sisters are sharing their sweet connections with the Savior.  Hearing the wHISper of clarity, direction, purpose, vision, greater understanding, and ultimately, a deeper love with Jesus.  Making prayer and fasting a priority is important.  We must make sure we don't turn it into work.  The motive is to seek God, to enjoy God, to pursue God.  The primary purpose is relationship building as we draw near to God.  As we finish the 21 Day Fast (5 more days), try mixing up your prayer routine.  Take a prayer walk in the rain.  Listen to a worship song. Pray through a Psalm.  Sit in silence for 5 minutes.

This Sunday, during both celebration services (9&11), we will finale the 21 Day Fast with rejoicing, testimonies, and praise.  We will also share a Gateway Cambodia Team recap video.  Our WHISPER sermon series will wrap up with the inspiring story of Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22).

Gateway Friends -

We're now on day 10 of our 21 day fast.  As we move into the second half of the journey, I want to encourage you with a devotional I have been reading daily (Lead Like Jesus - Let the leader in you show).

The call to follow Jesus is a call to transformation.  He does not leave us as He finds us.  What great news!  He leaves no area of our lives untouched: family relationships, friendships, our perspective on life, work, leadership and the world in which we live - all are fair game. Jesus doesn't come to justify our current lives, He comes to call us to real life.  Are you ready to trade in your life to find real life?  Are you ready to follow Him?

Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men.  At once they left their nets and followed him.  Matthew 4:19-20

"At once they left." The Disciples urgency and obedience compared to my slow and sluggish response to Jesus is alarming.  During the final 11 days of this fast, I'm committing to an "at once" immediacy. O, Lord, help us all respond quicker to Your wHISper this season.

Gateway Friends

Fasting is a personal event: "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you" (Matthew 6:16-18).

We're only a few days into our 21 day fast for the new year. My experience is that the first three days are often the most challenging.

I have appreciated the words of Stovall Weems in his book, Awakening: A New Approach to Faith, Fasting, and Spiritual Freedom.

Why do we fast?  You can do it for the right reasons or the wrong reasons. I want to make it clear that under the New Covenant, fasting is not to get God to change His mind about something. Fasting is also not something we do to obtain favor or forgiveness. After you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, your past, present, and future sins have already been forgiven! You don't need to fast to obtain favor or receive mercy because through Jesus you live in a continual state of God's mercy. Instead, fasting is a way of celebrating the goodness of God. You don't have to fast for mercy, instead, celebrate the mercy given to you as a free gift through your relationship with Christ. You don't fast to obtain the Lord's favor because you perpetually live in the favor of the Lord.

May this be an encouragement to you this season.

Happy 2018 to you and your families!!

We finished 2017 with some incredible celebration services. What a blast to be with many of you for the three on Dec 24/Christmas Eve and the two on Dec 31/New Years Eve.

In 2018 - Gateway wants to hear the Spirit's voice, the whisper, the nudge, the instruction, the direction, the vision for our lives.

Four ways to hear better. Here’s a Prescription from your Pastor - Spiritual Audiologist :)

1)    Slow down your pace when possible    Psalm 46:10  "Be…still…and…know…that I am God."

2)    Reduce and eliminate distractions  (social media, tv, netflix, bad habits, ?)                                    Luke 14:35 "... He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

3)    Tune in to Scripture                                                                                                                            Psalm 119:116  "I love your clear-cut revelation. You’re my place of quiet retreat; I wait for            your Word to renew me."

4)    Turn up the volume  // Resource to help you: Whisper Prayer & Fasting Guides // Jan                  8 Gateway launches a 21 Day Fast

Believing that this first week of 2018, you will be able to slow down, reduce distractions, tune in, turn up.

For a child has been born—for us!
the gift of a son—for us!
He’ll take over
    the running of the world.
His names will be: Amazing Counselor,
    Strong God,
Eternal Father,
    Prince of Wholeness.
His ruling authority will grow,
and there’ll be no limits to the wholeness he brings.

Five days til Christmas...

The closer we get to the BIG day, the more giddy I get.

This Christmas, Stacey and I will be hosting all five of our adult children, plus their spouses, plus the four grandbabies, plus our family from Cameroon Africa. Now, do you see why I'm so excited? Rejoice-Rejoice, the Prince of Wholeness is here! This Holiday season, you may be hosting or travelling near or far. Either way, I trust the sweetness of our Savior fills your homes, your families, your lives.

Gateway Friends

With only 12 days til Christmas, I'm wondering how you're doing?  Are you calm in the midst of the chaos?  Are you truly enjoying this season of Advent?  Are you experiencing genuine hope, peace, joy, and love this Christmas?  If so, wonderful, keep it up.  If not, my prayer is that the next 12 days leading up to Christmas will be full of God's wonder, God's hope, peace, joy and love.

Pursuing the KING

This Holiday season, we hear the catchy and creative Christmas carols from old.  Some of these songs are about Santa more than about the Savior.  Sleigh Ride, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells, Silver Bells, and White Christmas are classics.  But what about some of the famous carols that focus on baby Jesus and the reason for this season?  Songs like: What Child is This, The First Noel, Ave Maria, Silent Night, We Three Kings, Away in the Manger, and many others.  Whatever your favorites are--enjoy them this month! I simply wanted to remind us that God's Master Plan for humanity was to send a baby through a virgin, and that this baby would grow up to rescue and redeem the world. This Christmas, join me as we PURSUE the KING.

Pursue Jesus daily in prayer (Look up, back, around, ahead).

Pursue Jesus in worship (play your favorite carols and listen closely to the lyrics).

Pursue Jesus in the Word (read, write, apply the truths from Scripture).

Pursue Jesus at work, play, school, in retirement, in your hobbies, wherever you are.

Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire? – Corrie Ten Boom.

Pastor Greg asked this question on Sunday morning and many of us had to re-evaluate our prayer time.  Do we only pray when we need to?  Do we only read the Word when we are in a tough spot?  Do we only attend church when we need something from God?  That would definitely be the spare tire approach to a relationship with God.

The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing – to be in constant communication with God.  The result of living this way has so many benefits.  Our spirit becomes so “in-tune “ with His Spirit that we have a constant adviser in our everyday life.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve done life my way and I don’t like the results.  I’m pushing in extra close this holiday season to listen for His ways.  I want to let Him “steer” my life.

If you haven’t done so already, pick up one of the Nehemiah journals this Sunday and let it help give your prayer life a boost.

Thankful to be on this journey with you Gateway family!

From the Schaub family to yours, may your Thanksgiving be full of God's amazingly sufficient GRACE.  We're so thankful for each of you.  On Sunday, during the sermon, we laughed about how easy it is to make and bake a pumpkin pie.  However, I know the Holiday may not be easy for some of you.  Stacey and I are praying for your time around the Thanksgiving table.  Praying for conversations to be laced with grace and a spirit of joy, instead of anxiety and awkward tension.  Praying for Jesus to be included in your family connections.

"Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!"  Psalm 133

Many of us have been on a 10-week ROOTED journey that finishes before Thanksgiving. The adventure has deepened our connection with God, the Church, and our purpose.  Rooted has been a catalyst for life-change, community, intimacy, and generosity.  We have begun to see God in new ways and hear His voice in surprising places.  For all those who  participated, I applaud your commitment and trust the adventure was encouraging, as well as, edifying.

As we transition into the Holiday season, the community remains an essential ingredient in our faith development.  Most of the Rooted Life Groups will be sharing and serving alongside each other as 2017 comes to a close.  Contact the Church office for more information and ways to stay connected.

We continue our study in Nehemiah during Celebration Sunday services.  Take a look at chapters 7 & 8 and join us at 9 or 11.

See you Sunday,

Gateway Friends,

Many of the Gateway gals had a memorable Retreat last weekend, and for that we rejoice.  Most of the Dads made it to church with their kids in pajamas, and the pancake buffet was a hit.  As we move into the month of Thanksgiving, my heart rejoices, but it is also broken.  Rejoicing over the amazing ways God is moving in our community. . . broken for the tragic shooting in Texas, Sunday.  How can one's heart be filled with hope, and hurt at the same time?  Will you join the prayers of our nation as we lift up the families affected in Sutherland, TX. The fatal statistics are unimaginable, especially since half of the victims were children.  Oh, God, have mercy.

Friends, this dreadful event is beyond my understanding and that is why I'm leaning and trusting in the LORD. (Proverbs 3:5-6)  Some of you have asked if Gateway is prepared for an emergency of this magnitude?  I don't know if any church is fully prepared for such evil and hate.  However, our Gatekeepers and Leadership have activated emergency protocols that will instill safety and security for our precious flock.  If you have concerns or questions about the recent shootings or about ways to participate in Gateway's safety and security team, please email or call me.  This is not a season to panic or be paranoid, rather, we will be prepared.

Hurting, but HOPEFUL,

Gateway Friends

Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice!
Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!
Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy!
Let the trees of the forest sing for joy.

Psalm 96:11-12 NLT

As I write this email, the sunshine is streaming through my office window at the church.  Oh, what joy, but why am I inside?  Hopefully, you're out and about enjoying this crisp, but completely clear fall day?

Four exciting alerts for the week ahead:

  1. We get an extra hour of sleep with Daylight Savings Sat/Sun. this weekend.

  2. Ladies Retreat is Fri.-Sun. at Macleay.

  3. Men's breakfast this Saturday.

  4. Sunday pancakes and pajamas for the kids.

I just realized that three out of the four include good food and great connections together.

Join us for Communion and our sermon series: Nehemiah - building/battling/belonging this Sunday at 9&11 for Celebration Services.
